So you are ready to pack up everything that you own and move somewhere new
? Whether you have got a new job offer in a different city, you are relocating an expanding family to a larger house, or moving to be closer to family; you are closing the door on one stage of your life and beginning a brand new one. Moving can be very exciting, cleansing, and liberating. It can also be a lot of work! It can be amazing how much "stuff" we accumulate over time, and you never really realize how many possessions you own until you try to pack them all into boxes! Here are a few useful tips that should make your moving process a little easier.
Right Away' Boxes
There is nothing worse than settling in on your first night in the new home, exhausted after having carried boxes back and forth all day and ready for some well needed rest, searching for your toothbrush, pyjamas, or favourite slippers and realizing that you have no idea where they were packed! Instead of having to root through all the boxes, have each member of your household create a personal Right Away' box, bag, or suitcase with the most important items that they will need, such as sheets, a towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, cosmetics, some clothes, etc. When you are packing it, imagine you are going away for a day or two and think about what you will need.
Purge, Purge, Purge
The more unnecessary stuff you get rid of, the less you have to move! Have a massive garbage bin ready, and as you are packing your boxes, take a really scrutinizing look at every single one of your possessions and throw out everything you can. If you haven't used it in the last year, what are the odds that you will use it soon? Don't keep things just for the sake of keeping them, because you will spend your valuable time, energy, and money moving things around that you will probably never need.
Stay Organized
While it is tempting to get lazy and just throw everything into random boxes, the more organized you are when packing, the easier it will be to unpack. Some people like to place labels directly on the boxes, some like to number the boxes and then list the contents on a master list. Find a method that works for you and stick to it! One way to reduce confusion over which boxes go to which room, is to choose a colour for each room. Then use coloured stickers or markers to mark the boxes according to which room they belong in. For example, a box of plates and cutlery can have a red sticker, if red is your designated kitchen' colour. Then, when you are moving you can put the appropriate sticker on the door of each room so the mover know where to put everything without even having to ask or peek in the box.
Keep Important Items by Your Side
Pack your most valuable possessions and paper together and keep them with you in your car, rather than with the movers. This includes items such as passports, birth certificates, school records, bank records, antiques, silverware, valuable collections, or other such hard-to-replace items.
Moving can be a lot of work, but it is worth it when you are happily making yourself at home in your new house!
