With the phenomenal growth in the retail sector

, everything associated with it has also grown by leaps and bounds. Be it numerous malls, stores and markets or the continuous increase in products and services and of course the rising purchasing power of the consumers.

Everyday millions of transactions take place across the globe that are done at a rapid pace thanks to the barcodes labels. These labels make billing and its subsequent payments much easier and faster than individual keying in of items and prices.

Considering the enormous importance of barcodes it is essential that they be printed properly. Still, there are some common errors which occur while printing the barcodes that causes difficulties when scanning them. Fortunately such problems can be corrected easily. The following are some common errors with their solutions:

Under-burn or very lightly printed bar codes

This occurs when the printhead applies inadequate pressure on the printing material. The resultant dark bars are light thus offering a smaller contrast compared to the lighter spaces. This can be corrected by readjusting the pressure settings of the printhead to achieve the required contrast.

Overburn

It is just the opposite of underburn. Very high heat settings create thick bars that are difficult to read and of wrong specifications. Even the ratio of the bar dimensions is not maintained. The solution is again to readjust the heat settings.

Unwanted lines

Sometimes white streaks or diagonally printed lines appear on the darker bars. This is due to incorrect loading of the printer ribbon. To solve it, load the label material as per the printers standards making sure to insert it smoothly and uniformly into the printer.

Images with marks or void

Marks and empty spaces occur because of dirt, scratches or burnt elements on the printhead. The burnt elements do not allow heat to be transferred on the printing material therefore creating a void. Dust particles or similar things scatter the heat on the ribbon creating marks that prevent the barcode from being readable. Cleaning can remove the dirt and dust while the removal of burnt out elements on the printhead may also solve the problem.

Inability to obtain wide/narrow ratio

Both over-burn and under-burn cause an unwanted ratio between the wide and narrow elements of the barcode sign. To attain the best quality in barcode printing, the signs must have the appropriate wide-to-narrow ratio in the label space per the specification. By increasing the printing resolution one can also obtain the correct ratio.

Poor edge definition

The printing speed leads to this problem. This can be corrected by regularly checking on the labels. Also by printing some test labels before printing the ones for use, when each shift is started and each time the ribbon is replaced.
