Renault Duster Vs Mahindra Xuv 5oo-which Is Mightier?
The two SUVs that are being compared here today may look as different as chalk and cheese
, which they are, but to put things into perspective it only made sense to pit the Duster against one of the most successful SUVs in recent times the Mahindra XUV 5OO.
Style VS Size
There is no denying that Mahindra has done a laudable job of making the boxy looking XUV 500 so supremely macho. The pared-stripped frame, the LED daytime running lights and even the slinky wheel arch bulge just makes you bat your lids in appreciation. And the design flair doesnt just stop there. Even the very geeky looking centre console, Honda Civic-inspired hand brake lever and the optical illusion air con vents replete with black, maroon and metal accents on the inside are impressive enough to get you hooked.
In comparison, the Renault Duster, looks mellower and exudes muted appeal, in the first glance. But as the car grows on you, you will love it for what it is simple. The glaring headlamps, the bulging wheel arches and the overall stance of the Duster exudes masculine appeal. Plus, the bash plates, classy roof rails, clever use of subtle creases and bulges around the tiny vertical tail lamps and every other minute detail that Renault has painfully put in place makes it stand out.
Size wise, the difference between a XUV and a Duster is apparent. In effect, the Duster is a smaller vehicle than the XUV 500. However, its proportions and strong design elements make it look a whole lot bigger than the Duster actually is. Hats off to the ingenuity and clever designing of Renault, the Duster definitely holds its own against the XUV here!
Space VS Utility
If you swear by the adage bigger is better, its time for a reality check! Before we get into the big business, just sit back and consider how often would do you actually use the third row of seat? The XUV 500, despite having a third row, comes with cramped legroom. So, the third row of seat is as good as none. Its only in case of headroom and shoulder room that it clinches the deal. Plus, spacious cabin space makes ingress and egress easier.
The Duster is not much different in terms of space its got plenty of legroom and more than enough headroom. Once you step in, you will be surprised to see how much the Duster feels like a sedan than an SUV. The seats are comfortable, and the dash is impressively too.
The XUV 500 has a bigger boot. But then, you have to fold the third row seat flat to use any of it. It has 703 litres of boot space compared to 475 litres of boot space of Duster. But the latter comes with a usable parcel tray where you can keep your luggage safely out of sight. So while the bigger XUV obviously gives you more luggage space, both vehicles easily accommodate a family of five.
Power and Performance
Mahindra XUV 500 comes with a large engine under the hood. The 2.2-litres, 140 bhp and 330 Nm engine of the XUV certainly dwarfs the Dusters 1.5-litre, 108 bhp and 248Nm unit on paper. But then, the XUV also weighs 669kgs which is way heavier than the Duster. That means the Duster has a 3.81 PS/ton benefit.
The engines of both the Duster and the XUV 5OO are mated to 6-speed manual transmissions and both return very respectable efficiency figures too. While the Mahindra XUV 500 returns 12kmpl, the Duster 110PS dCi gave 12.75kmpl overall. So both cars are pretty evenly matched even in terms of running costs although theyre very different in character.
The XUV is definitely more suited to highways than the Duster. It is also more driveable than the Renault, thanks to its impressive torque.
Verdict
Both the Mahindra XUV 5OO and the Renault Duster are extremely desirable machines and you cant really go wrong with either. It will boil down to whether you want to be the big bad bully with the XUV or the friendly neighborhood muscle with the Duster.
They dont differ much in terms of overall performance and as long as you have a family of five or less, youll be as comfortable in one as in the other. Plus both the cars are fairly impressive on the feature list. The Duster looks and feels international. The choice is clearly for you to make.
