Today Toronto occupies an area within the limits of 21 km North to South and 43km East to West

For a little on the beginnings of todays great city of Toronto, the area is believed to have been inhabited originally by the Iroquois indigenous tribes, then later by the Huron. French traders established Fort Rouille in 1750 where they stayed until 1759. During the American Revolutionary War, British loyalists fled across Lake Ontario into the new territory. In 1787 the British purchased 1000 square kilometres from the Mississaugas. In 1793 the settlement was named Fort York and then became the capital of Upper Canada. The little town was destroyed by the Americans in 1813.

In 1834 what was left of Fort York was incorporated into a new town called Toronto after the Iroquois word tkaronto. The population at that stage was about 9,000 and included many African American slaves who fled to freedom from some of the states to the South, that would later unite to become the USA.

Todays population of Toronto consists of 2.5 million residents and the GTA has a population of 5.5 million. This makes up almost a quarter of the total population of Canada. It is rated as one of the worlds most liveable cities. The massive influx of immigrants and refuges over the years has developed this into a truly cosmopolitan city, the different cultures of great interest and enjoyment to tourists. It has a rich cultural heritage with vibrant social events and a great deal to see. Seeing and enjoying leads us to the next question the best way to get there - transport.

In modern days, the Greater Toronto Area or GTA has the third largest public system of transport in the whole of the Northern part of the continent of America, just after New York and Mexico City. There are, in the city of Toronto, an extensive underground train system as well as an elevated rapid transport line. There are also bus and streetcar complexes. In the GTA there is a GO Transit that transports more than 200,000 daily on weekdays. This system has a bus network and seven train lines. To supplement these systems, there are hundreds of taxis.
