Renting Out Your Vacation Home: Don't Forget These Useful Additions

Towels, Shower Gel, Shampoo

Remember that you're offering an alternative to a hotel stay. Guests who are used to hotels will probably not bring basic toiletries...you don't have to provide them, but it's a good idea. And try to provide soft, decent quality towels, or you'll risk looking cheap.

Hair Dryer, Iron, Ironing Board, Mirror

Ok, these are by no means compulsory. You'll simply gain brownie points from the odd guest who might want to use them. Any ladies (or gents) who forget their hair dryer will be very pleased to find one, while a mirror is useful for everyone (try to provide a full length mirror, which is easy to fit on the back of a bedroom door). If you cater for business travellers, it's worth including an iron and ironing board for guests who need to look smart.

Salt/Pepper, Cooking Oil, Tea/Coffee, Sugar, Milk

It's worth keeping a few basic supplies in the kitchen. You may even find that guests have already left some of these items from previous stays. You can buy long-life milk if you don't want the hassle of providing fresh milk every time. It's a bit annoying for guests to have to buy quantities far in excess of what they need for a short stay, whereas it won't cost much for you to provide them and they will last a long time.

Washing Up Liquid, Dishwasher Tablets, Kitchen Paper, Dishcloths, Washing Powder

It's great if your apartment or house has a washing machine and/or dishwasher, but they probably won't get used if you don't provide powder. And it is normal to find the other items in a domestic kitchen, so guests will expect to find them in yours.

Fans, First Aid Kit, Torch, Candles/Matches, Pens/Paper

Try to think about anything that could realistically inconvenience your guests, and plan for it. If your property gets very hot during the day or night, why not provide a fan or two? You could also offer a basic first aid kit, while a torch and candles will be useful if there is a power cut.

Playing Cards, Board Games, Books

If your guests have kids, these basic entertainments might prove useful, especially if there is bad weather. If you're feeling especially generous, you could even provide a games console such as a PlayStation or Wii. You can easily find games on eBay and in second hand stores.

Useful Information

I have often found that the best hosts leave some information about local amenities and attractions: convenience stores, shopping, restaurants, post office, launderette, useful phone numbers and a map etc. Even if I haven't met the owner, it has made the stay easier and I have remembered the touch.

Guestbook

DON'T FORGET A GUESTBOOK! Having made all this effort to be a considerate and accommodating hosts and to give your guests a wonderful stay, you should certainly try to get a reward for it! If guests have enjoyed their stay, they are normally more than happy to leave a review.

N.B. All of these items need to be clearly visible to guests. Don't hide them away in cupboards, or your guests will never know about them.
