Lately, I have indulged myself into a new hobby. Influenced by my new found friends in college who were all fashion conscious, I dabbled into trying to sew my own clothes. Luckily, we still have a sewing machine at home that was once used by my mom who has also been in dressmaking as a hobby. However, I found out that it is not functioning so I also have to know how to fix a sewing machine.

I found out that it is not that hard at all to fix one. Most sewing machines, especially the branded ones like Singer, Bernina and Brother, were heavy duty sewing machines that does not easily broke down. With a sewing machine repair kit, even a novice like me could easily do basic and minor repairs at home.

The most common problem that one encounters is the need for the sewing machine to be cleaned and properly lubricated. This could be easily accomplished by removing the top, bottom, side and thread bobbin plate covers to be able to see and access the sewing machine's internal parts. You would need to vacuum them thoroughly to remove the dirt that has built up over the years. You might also need to use tweezers or a toothpick to remove pieces of cloth or thread that was caught in the thread bobbin compartment.

After cleaning, you should lubricate the moving parts with sewing machine oil as well as apply grease in the gears. Make sure that you don't use too much oil or grease as it will also not do any good to your machine. You could then reassemble the sewing machine and try if it will work

There are other ways on how to fix a sewing machine. Some would be a little complicated but for the most part, the problems that will be encountered are simple enough to be done by novices like you and me.
