Repairing Mold Damage

It is really no fun at all to deal with mold damage whether it is from flooding

, high humidity, or leakage in plumbing. Mold is a kind of fungus with airborne spores that can be present even in homes considered the cleanest ones. These spores will remain floating in the air until they attach themselves to some household surfaces such as ceilings, drywall, etc. and form smelly white, blue, brown, black, green, orange or red colonies. If repair does not start immediately, mold can definitely spread very fast throughout your properties.

When repairing damages caused by molds, the safety of the inhabitants and properties must be the top priority. It is because molds can generally cause lots of health problems, most especially to people with weak immune systems, mainly respiratory illness like asthma, etc. Mold problems in properties can cause serious damage also. So, when repairing damages caused by molds, you should wear goggles, gloves and cotton face mask. Make sure that the infected area is properly ventilated especially when cleaning it using bleach and other strong chemicals.

The surfaces that are easiest to repair after the infestation of mold are metal, wood, ceramic and glass. Most kinds of mold can be easily removed and cleaned by scrubbing a solution of 3.78 liters of water or 1 gallon per 240 milliliters or 1 cup of chlorine bleach to the infected surfaces. After the scrub, you should rinse them thoroughly. Then, to prevent the molds from growing back on these surfaces, apply a solution that has borate-based dishwater or laundry detergent. Leave the solution on the surface to prevent the molds from growing back.

When the mold has also infected your curtains, bed linens, clothing and some other fabrics, just wash them with hot water and detergent. This will kill the mold. Then, for your painted stuffs, do not just paint over the item because the mold will just continue to build up under the painted area and will just cause the peeling of the paint immediately. Remember that you cant just simply paint them over. You will just waste your money for paint and effort for painting them because the paint will just peel quickly.

Generally, you will find it difficult to repair the mold damage caused to the stuff or properties that absorb water yet cannot be washed. These items include sofas, beds, chairs and some other upholstered furniture. You may dry them out in areas far away from your home and then vacuum them well so that any odor that is noticeable can disappear. However, you must remember that the mold in these items may still grow back.

Oftentimes, repairing the mold damage in your home on your own can be a bit impossible so it is a good idea to seek the help of the expert in this area. If you are trying to get rid of the mold from your valuable items such as paintings or antique rugs, you may think about getting professional help because you can damage them further by doing the restoration by yourself.
