Repairing Plastic Laminates

Laminates are the material which is made by unity two or more materials together

. Material used for laminates is variable. In this article we will talk about the plastic laminate, which is nowadays commonly used in kitchen worktops or other items. Kitchen worktops usually have the plastic laminate grasped to the central part of the chipboard. But at times you are required to add plastic laminate to the exposed worktop.

It is not hard to cut laminate; there are certain tools which can be used to cut the laminate such as power saw or trimming knife. Always keep the decorative side in upward direction while cutting the laminate with saw. Before cutting, make sure that the laminate is properly secure so that it will not move while cutting. There is always a need to cut a laminate slightly larger than the required size; it will help make your trimming task rather easy.

Laminates are secured by using adhesives. It is important to take special care while positioning the adhesive gel on the surface and while placing laminate over it. If you are dealing with horizontal surface, use drawing pins at the back area, these help the laminate sheet to lower the laminate on the surface slowly. Allow extra sheet of laminate for edge strips. You can trim the extra part of the laminate sheet later with the help of trimming knife. You need to place the laminate on the adhesive firmly for some time, this will allow the adhesive to become stable between the two surfaces.

Leave the adhesive for almost half an hour to dry. Once the adhesive is secured enough, trim off the extra laminate. You need to be very careful while trimming the excess laminate. Any rough treatment may split the laminate. Use special tools like files, planes, trimming knife and surforms etc. The two most useful tools for trimming the laminate are powered file and a replaceable blade plane that has a special laminate cutting blade attached to it. Always work from the ends towards the center. Avoid breaking the laminate.

Glue guns

Glue guns are used to melt a special kind of glue. This melted glue is used between two layers as an adhesive material. Once this glue cools down, it makes a powerful bond. The heat is provided by electricity to the glue guns. Glue guns are very handy and are best for modeling. They are used for sticking paper or even used for joining low voltage wires as telephone wires, burglar alarm or bell wire.

A glue gun very much resembles a small electric drill. These guns are usually operated in two ways: thumb operated guns and trigger operated guns. Trigger operated guns has a longer stick than usual and have a higher feed rates. Thumb operated guns operate by feeding the stick of the glue into the back of the gun. Thumb pressure determines the rate of feed.

As far as wood joints, rigid plastic and PVC are concerned, glue gun is very helpful but for items required wet heat, it is useless.
