Repairing The Electrical Outdoor Outlet By Yourself
It seems impossible to believe that you have electrical outlets at home that work without discontentment and envy
. At times, these electrical outlets start making inconvenience for both the appliance and the homeowner. The minor trouble in the electrical outlet may cause the no power in the entire house.
It is neither easy nor economical to fetch the services of electricians to repair these faulty electrical outlets. Moreover repairing an erratic electrical outlet is that easy a job that can be accomplished by any individual and thus, all should have that know how. To make this task still easier, some of the tools and equipments such as screwdriver, GFCI outlet and wire cutter must be readily available.
As it is known that electricity is no body's friend, we should not take a chance and should switch off the power to that circuit before proceeding to work on it. This could be done from the main distribution box, either by removing the fuse or by circuit breaker.
With the help of a screwdriver, we now unscrew and take away the fasteners fixing the outer cover, over which the problematic electrical outlet is fixed. These should be kept safe to be re- fixed after repairing the outlet.
Similarly, loosen the screws holding the electrical outlet to the wall. Pull the outlet out of the electrical box as far as the wiring will allow. Inside the outlet, you will find three wires connected to the outlet with the wire nuts. Loosen the screws enough to slide the wires out from under them and discard the outlet.
Strip off the damaged part of the wires using the wire cutter. Also, remove about one inch of the insulation from the wires. Well, you don't have to remove the plastic covering from the ground copper wire as it is already bare.
A GFCI outlet should always be chosen as a replacement to the damaged one. For connecting the new GFCI outlet insert back the wires under the brass screws and with a screwdriver tighten these screws down so as to hold the wires firmly in place. We then insert the copper wire under the green screw and tighten it down sufficiently.
Push the wiring back into the electrical box, line up the holes in the top and bottom of the outlet with the holes in the top and bottom of the electrical box, and insert the screws and tighten them down to hold the outlet in place. Replace the cover over the outlet box, insert the screws in the hole and secure the cover to the box. Turn the power back to the outlet at the main circuit panel.
