Repetition Is The Mother Of All Skills
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition! How many times have you heard this
? How many times have you done this? From a young age, we are told to practice the same thing over and over again, and this will lead to success. We do countless additions, or multiplications in order to get good at them. A lot of the time we find this boring and unexciting, and this has a counter productive effect, especially as we grow up into adult life.
Luckily there is a silver lining in this cloud and repetition is the mother of all skills. If you can steer children to do something that that they like doing, and that is at the same time good for them, then they will repeat it over and over again, and increase their skills at doing it, until they have mastered this skill. This is perhaps why children seem to pick up new skills are ideas far quicker than adults.
Kids have a natural tendency and ability to repeat the things they like, for example my kids will watch the same film a hundred times and they just love it whereas me, if I watch a film once it would have to be three years before I could watch it again.
So, when kids like something, they want to do it over and over and over again. This is how they learn and pick up skills, habits, and knowledge both quickly and efficiently, so much so that they very quickly become proficient in them - much to our surprise. That is why as grown up we learn less quickly as we do not repeat things due to the boring, unexciting nature of repetition.
Children are therefore wired to repeat what they like and this fact can therefore be used to increase their knowledge and abilities through home learning increasing their skills in all areas of learning.
Using a memory technique such as Mind Mapping or Memory Mapping is a fun and easy learning method that can be used to increase children's skills in writing, speaking and almost all areas of literacy learning and children will therefore want to use them time and time again and their repeated use in home learning will massively increases their abilities in all areas including schoolwork.
What is Memory Mapping? Well it's a way of remembering using a structured visual map, using all the elements that the memory champions use. Using this technique can be fun for both parent and child.
