Replacing Lighting For Efficiency - Why It Makes Sense

Can replacing lighting for efficiency make sense for your bottom line

? Consider this, many businesses and homes waste a ton of energy annually, energy that could otherwise be conserved and preserved if simple switches are made by replacing the lighting. We all need to have lighting in our homes and in our places of business, but that does not mean that we cant reassess the situation from time to time to see if there are newer technologies that make more sense financially and from an environmental standpoint.

When put into juxtaposition with other money saving innovations, like thicker and better sealed windows, insulation and energy efficient appliances, the proper lighting fixtures can save a business or a household a sweet chunk of change over the course of the year. This is extra money that really adds up quickly, and that can be applied to increasing ones saving account or that can be used to help pay for that desirable mid-year vacation, or that can be reinvested into any business to help ensure its growth and profitability. All of that aside, its a greener world in which we live, and any way that we can do our part goes a long way in preserving our environment and in securing a better future for the next generation.

For example, in warehouses a popular new fixture that saves a lot of money off utility costs is the F-Bay T-5 HO & T-8 Fluorescent fixtures. These newer innovations basically render the High-Bay HID fixtures obsolete. This is because they use up roughly half the energy to produce the same amount of light. A quick cost comparison on savings is telling. For example, lets say the average fixture of this type burns 88 watts at 4,500 hours per year at $0.10 per KWH. One would save roughly $40 per fixture per year when making the switch. Now multiply this number by how many fixtures that you have in your warehouse or place of business. As you can see, the annual savings may not seem like that much at first, but when you do the math, it really adds up to be a pretty penny. Imagine what you could be doing with that money each year, instead of needlessly burning it and depleting our energy supplies?

Now apply this logic and same math to your homefront, only a bit lesser of an annual savings, as the lighting fixtures in homes are generally smaller than the commercial lighting fixtures are. Imagine this for an example of what you might be able to save in annual utility costs. When compared to the average 60 watt bulb, a florescent bulb can illuminate a greater area of space while consuming half of the energy or more. So lets say that your home has about thirty light bulbs in that you frequently use. Now lets say you can shave off the cost of using these bulbs by about $15 per bulb per year. Now factor in that these types of bulbs last many years longer than traditional (and outdated) bulbs do, and you can get a pretty good idea of how much money you stand to save each year. That vacation to Hawaii youve been dreaming may just require that you swap bulbs out.
