Replacing Spark Plugs Wires
Replacing Spark Plugs Wires
Replacing Spark Plugs Wires
The ignition process is fairly based on the proper working of the spark plugs. Spark plugs produces spark which the helps to ignite the fuel inside the engine. As the spark plug wire name suggests that these are the wires connected to the spark plug, which produces electrical spark. You need to have a look on these wires daily, because damage wires cause a lot of trouble.
Some suggestions are given below that how you can replace these wires without spending too much time.
The only thing you require to change the wires is new box of spark plug wires.
Steps
1. Park a car on a level surface and apply Park brakes as well.
2. Open the front hood. Look out for the spark plugs wires. These wires are usually found in black colors but they can be blue, black red or orange. The number of spark plug wires depends upon the number of cylinders your engine has. It means that wires and the cylinders correspond to each other.
3. Take the box of new wires and open it. Look for the numbering (labels 1, 2, 3.) on wires. Lay them out in order of length, if wires are not labeled.
4. Hold the bottom of the wire on one end and apply force outward or pull it back to yourself slightly until it pops off.
5. Guided by the wire to its other end, it is attached to the distributor cap. Pull the wire from the distributor cap and remove it.
6. After removing a wire from spark plug, have a look on plug for possible damages or presence contaminants on electrodes. If you find any damage, it is better to change the plug as well.
7. Mostly the wires are attached with slots to avoid their connection with other wires or part of the engine. These slots are made of small plastic pieces which hold the wires firm against the connectors. To ensure longer life of new wires, be sure to put the wires back into the slots.
8. Replace the old spark plug wire with the new wire of same length or label. The plug wire makes a clicking sound when it holds a spark plug.
9. Repeat the same process for replacing all the rest of the wires. Always replace one wire at a time.
Things to Keep in Mind
- In case if wires are permanently attached to distributor cap, you need to change both the cap and the wires at the same time.
- The replacement of the wires depends upon the conditions of the wires. If you need to change only one wire, there is no need to change the other wires.
- It is very important to deal with one wire at a time. Do not disconnect all the wires at once. They must be attached in the same order they pops off.
