Replacing kitchens yourself 'can save 3k

DIY enthusiasts who work to replace a kitchen themselves without hiring a contractor could save thousands of pounds on the overall cost.

Carrying out the work to install a new kitchen without professional help can take up to ten days and requires some skill, according to Tim Doherty, managing director of the National Self Build & Renovation Centre.

He explained there is likely to be some electrical and plumbing work involved in the project, in addition to a lot of tasks involving carpentry.

For those who feel confident with the jobs, big savings can be made.

"Ripping out and installing a new kitchen yourself can therefore save you 2,000 to 3,000," Mr Doherty explained.

He added that anyone who is not confident about carrying out the installation themselves can still remove the existing kitchen and save several hundred pounds on the overall cost.

Anyone who is undertaking a self-build project was recently advised by Homebuilding and Renovating to consider what they intend to do in detail before starting.

Adding a quality kitchen or bathroom to a house can increase the value of a house "significantly", a major trade association has claimed.

Self-builders currently in the middle of a project may be interested to know that buyers recognise that kitchens and bathrooms are two of the larger interior investments and they welcome not having to pay for them themselves, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) said.

Research published by Nationwide Building Society in May 2006 stated that, although location remains key to house value, bathrooms can add more than five per cent to property values.

Robin Hood-Leeder, director of membership services at the FMB, said: "Sometimes in estate agents' windows they will not show you pictures of the house, but they'll show you pictures of the kitchen and then the bathroom. I suppose it's because people recognise that these are where the big expenditures are."

The FMB is the largest trade association in the UK building industry.
