Replacing the Bed on Your Truck
Not many people ever care to change the factory bed on their truck. Most people buy a truck and use it for the purpose for which it was designed. However, for many people, there is definitely a need to customize a truck to better suit their work or pleasure desires. In these instances, it becomes necessary, sometimes, to change the bed of the truck. This can be a rather large project, but thanks to reamers and the step drill bit, it can be a lot easier. If you have any ambition, and time this is a project you can do yourself in your spare time, there is no need to pay somebody a lot of money if you are willing to get a little dirty and are not scared of a little work.
First, you need to find a bed that properly fits your truck. Sure, you can put one that is designed for another truck on your truck but this will look unsightly and may cause other issues later. Whether you buy a truck bed form a junkyard or a retail store that sells them brand new, check to make sure it will fit your model of the truck.
Before you remove the bed, either off of a truck at the junkyard or off of your personal truck, there are a few things you need to do first. Unbolt the gas cap and line first. Almost every truck has the fuel access running into the bed of the truck, so that is where you typically start first. After that, you need to remove the grounding strap that goes from the cab of the truck to the bed. Both of these items are easy to remove. As well, you need to disconnect the light from the back of the truck bed. The lights should have some quick disconnect places so that they can be disconnected with little effort.
Now that everything is disconnected, it is time to take the bed off. There are usually eight to ten bolts that hold the bed to the truck frame. These usually can be located with ease and can be removed easily as well. Make sure every wire is disconnected and every bolt is out or you will be very frustrated when it comes time to lift it off of the truck.
Now, you are going to need a little help. Even though the truck bed is not extremely heavy, it is recommended to have a minimum of four people to help lift it off. Make sure you set it on wooden blocks to prevent damage in case you decide to sell it or put it back on the truck later.
Putting the new bed on is just as easy. Simply reverse these steps and it is that simple. Many times the holes in your truck and the holes in the new bed do not line up right. This is where you use reamers to make the hole align perfectly. If there are no holes in the bed where you have holes in the truck, use a step drill bit to create a perfect hole that can now be used.
