Singapore is not only an island nation in Southeast Asia but also a city-state. She locates at south of Malaya island, adjacent to Nankou of Malacca Strait, facing Indonesia through Singapore Strait in the south and Malaysia through Johor Strait in the north, lying between Singapore and Malaysia through a long beach. Singapore is the one of the most important financial, service and transport center in Asia. In keeping their city clean and tidy, Singapore has achieved a lot and enjoyed a good name of "garden city".
Singapore is a city state, meaning Lion City. According to the records, in about 1150 AD, when Sumatra Srivijaya reached the island by boat and saw a beast, called Lion by the locals, thus she owns the name of Lion City. The national flag consists of two rectangular shape, red upper and white below, length and width ratio of 3:2. There is one white crescent moon and five white pentagrams at upper left. Red represents human equality, white represents pure and morality, the crescent moon represents the country, and the five pentagrams represent the country's desire of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. The close and ordered combination of crescent moon and five pentagrams represent the united and friendly spirit of Singaporean People.
The political languages of Singapore are English and Chinese. Li Guangyao has been the president for a long time since 1965 and became senior minister from November 1990 after he resigned the president position. In the middle of 1880s, when the Great Britain had expanded its territory and the trade in China, they urgently needed a port for boats berthing and maintenance in order to obtain advantages over Hollanders in trade competition. Therefore they had established trade port at Bingcheng (1786) and Singapore (1819). At the end of 1818, Lord Hastings decided to authorize Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles from Bencoolen to establish a new trade port ant the south of Malaya island. After several troubles, unfortunately Singapore has been the settlement, thus the plan has been grounded.
The education system in Singapore is similar to that of Great Britain, excluding literature and language, the other subjects are used English as median language. If a child has finished the study of middle and primary schools from 10 to 11 years, he can go to junior college, senior high school or technical institute, most students of the former two colleges can go the local university for further study. There ate three universities in Singapore, that's the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University.
