Research Day With Jones Act Law

It was a sunny Friday morning I woke up and opened the television for the daily news

, I was sitting in my couch with a glass of milk on the other hand while paying attentively to what the news might be. I was caught by an accident offshore, a ship that sink because of troubles engine, it was not a ship with passengers but it was a cargo ship or it much as a barge. That was a horrible accident it was not only because of the accident cause damage to the ocean and the living creatures and resources on it but more on the deaths and injuries to the workers. I cannot imagine how will the workers would recover from that traumatic event, how about their families or those who had passes away from that incident? Will the worker be able to work after what happened? What are the steps that the company doing in response to this ?

As soon as I finished my breakfast and watching the news, I went to the house of cousin just few blocks from our house, I ask him if he had already the topic for the research that we were going to do. We wonder for almost 30 minutes and finally I suggested that we were going to took a research regarding offshore accidents and other related issues on it, and we could see if there were legislations or a law that covers the said issues. We were interested on the topic and agreed to it.

We made our data gathering individually for the first two hours and going to have a brainstorming after it. We came up from several information, we had learned that maritime industry was one of the most riskiest industry and at the same it was the industry with high demands on the workers. Workers working on the said industry were earning high compared to other employee but this high earning was accompanied by the risk. Being aware of the current events we agreed to it, because of the series of incident happened from time to time. It was in the year 1920 when Senator Wesley Jones passed the law that gives protection to the maritime workers. Because of this law the workers will not end up into negligence after they suffer accident or personal injury. The law was called the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 or it was commonly known as the Jones Act Law.

The Jones Act Law was quite a complicated law but it was very significant to the maritime workers. For them it was the shield that cloth them while they were sailing and soaring the dangers in the open ocean.
