Before you begin whether you're in a commercial or residential building remember to remove any loose paint or caulking as well as any blisters. After you've cleaned flaking or blistered paint and cracked or loose caulk you'll want to repair any damage you found. The surfaces are now ready to receive a new layer of paint. Scraping or sanding the surface and repairing any damage will ensure the new coat of paint adheres properly which reduces the risk of damage.

Apply a coat of primer whether you're painting indoors or outdoors. Your results will be much more professional looking than forgoing the primer. Primer is used to reduce the number of top coats required for the job, helps cover stains or keeps them from bleeding through and it reduces the possibility of developing blisters. Tint the primer by adding a little bit of the topcoat and blending it.

Use an extension pole when painting rather than using a ladder. You can get extension poles in various lengths which should allow you to paint nearly every ceiling height, even cathedral ceilings. Why do you want to use an extension pole? The biggest reason is that you'll be less likely to spill paint because you won't be trudging it up and down the ladder and it won't be knocked off.

Be sure to keep track of the paint you use. There's nothing more frustrating than to think you have enough paint and then run out. Write down the brand name of the paint you used as well as the color. If the paint was specially mixed for you, you'll want to know the formula to get that color again if needed. One way to keep track of the paint you use in each room is to place a piece of masking tape under the light switch and writing the information on that. You won't lose the information quite as easily doing this.

Consider using textures on the walls and ceilings. Texture helps hide a multitude of painting sins. Using texture can also add to the style of the room particularly if you have antiques or are trying to create old world charm in your 21st century Bay Area home.
