It's called restless leg syndrome

It's called restless leg syndrome. I call it the heeby geebies. Whatever name you call it by, it's one of the most aggravating, unpleasant conditions I know of. It's accurate name is restless leg syndrome or RLS

for short. It is characterized by sensations described as burning, creepy crawly, pins and needles or tugging deep in the legs. The only way to pacify it is by moving your legs.

There is a part of the nervous system that affects movement of the bodies appendages and this is where RLS stems from. It can begin at any age, but is more common in older people as they pass middle age. Even though this condition ordinarily affects the legs, it can also occur in the feet, thighs, hands and arms.

Some contributing factors associated with this condition are anemia, obesity, kidney disease, nerve disease, varicose veins, thyroid problems, heavy metal toxicity, Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and many other ailments.


RLS more often than not leads to insomnia and is in fact considered to be one of the top four major sleep disorders. Symptoms usually start in the evening especially when you go to bed and are trying to fall asleep. The body might be exhausted, but the legs just want to dance.

There are some things that make RLS worse that you should avoid. Alcohol, caffeine such as in coffee, chocolate, tea and some sodas, and tobacco. Some medicines to keep away from are anti-psychotics, anti-nausea medicines, anti-depressants and antihistamines.

It is thought that there is no one cure for this condition and doctors will treat it on an personal basis depending on what they think

the cause of the condition stemmed from.

Some natural substances to check out are iron tablets if it is thought to be from anemia. Also garlic, folic acid, coenzyme Q10 and ginko biloba could help.

Calcium and magnesium can also help this condition and should be taken together to make them more absorbable. Magnesium helps to preserve normal nerve function and has muscle relaxing characteristics. Always seek your doctor's advice if you are taking prescription medication prior to taking any supplements.

Restless leg syndrome can also be helped through exercise, particularly walking, biking and stretching. A regular exercise program also helps to let you sleep better. Another remedy to endeavoris to warm the legs up with a heating pad in the evening and then massage each leg.
