Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder with unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move when at rest to try to relieve these feelings. Restless leg syndrome (RLS) occurs most often in middle-aged and older adults. It is worsened by stress. The cause is not known. The diagnosis of Restless leg syndrome is based on the patient's description and personal history of their affliction
Restless leg syndrome can be difficult to identify but its main characteristics are : -
* Difficulty in sleeping, persistent leg movements during sleep hours.
Symptoms occur most frequently during the evening or early part of the night. Irresistible urge to move the legs. Abnormal sensation in the legs, occasionally, feet, thighs, arms, which entail creeping, burning, tingling, cramping, aching, pulling or crawling sensations within the affected extremities. Sensations or discomfort (not pain, not cramps) are relieved by movement of the legs. May occur during the day. Worse when lying down and may be temporarily diminished by voluntary movements of the affected limb. The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition.
Treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome
Some people find that symptoms improve if they cut back or avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Successfully managing an underlying condition, such as anemia or diabetes, can sometimes alleviate Restless leg syndrome.
No single medicine works for all people who have Restless leg syndrome. It may take several changes in medicines and dosages to find the best approach. Sometimes, a medicine will work for a while and then stop working. Some of the effective medicines used to treat Restless leg syndrome also are used to treat Parkinson disease. These medicines make dopamine or act like it in the parts of the brain that control movement. (Dopamine is a chemical that helps you move properly.)
