Restoring our environment is an obligation that we often take for granted

. More often than not, some people don't just care at all. In reality, the municipal solid waste people generate everyday adds up to the environment's deterioration because of inefficient solid waste management. This brings implications affecting the environment, and even public health. And for many years now many countries still rely to landfill system which causes ecological problems such as leachate generation, surface and ground water pollution, disease vectors, toxic emissions, and air pollution.

For example in the Philippines, based on DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) records about 6,700 tons of wastes are being generated in the NCR (National Capital Region) alone every day but only around 10% are being recycled or composted. The remaining 90% usually goes to dump sites, streets, backyards and different bodies of water. Imagine the almost 770 million people in the Philippines generating wastes every day, by the next ten years there wouldn't be enough landfills for their accumulated wastes.

With this, the Philippine environment has suffered the most. Many of its flora and fauna species have been threatened with extinction due to pollution and widespread logging. Philippines is known to be one of the ten most biologically mega-diverse countries where about 1,100 land vertebrate species can be found including over 100 mammal species and 170 bird species not thought to exist elsewhere. It is just saddening that many of its endangered species are now going extinct due to human activities particularly wastes generation.

But as they say, for every problem there's a solution. The Philippine government is just right to adopt the Biosphere Process System or Biosphere Technology to resolve their environmental problems brought by wastes. The technology was introduced in the country by Spectrum Blue Steel Corporation (SBSC) in association with True Green Energy Group (TGEG) which are both environmental companies founded by Ronald Flynn. SBSC is a duly registered company in the Philippines which has been given rights by Biosphere Development Corporation and GEECF to market, sell, install and manage biosphere gasification facilities in the country.

What is Biosphere Technology?

Biosphere Technology is a gasification process wherein it efficiently destroys wastes using thermal decomposition and then converting these wastes into clean green energy. The process is very different with incineration since it is done in an environment with controlled oxygen thereby limiting the atmospheric emissions. The technology is an invention of Dr. Chris McCormack who is known for his numerous original contributions in scientific literature. Dr. McCormack is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GEECF.

Significance of Biosphere Technology to the Environment

Aside from its capacity to destroy solid wastes in efficient and environmental manner, the most interesting and valuable contribution of this technology is that it can be used for clean green energy production. We are all aware that the world needs sufficient supply of energy for economic growth, and as of now fossil fuels are its main source of energy which brings about environmental impact. Fossil fuels particularly oil are the highest emitters of greenhouse gases that contributes to global warming. What the biosphere technology offers is a renewable energy that will replace if not decrease the use of fossil fuels. It would allow us to rely on green energy which is more efficient with oil. However the dependence on oil will not be eliminated abruptly but it is possible. The world's dependence on oil continues so long we remain to use oil. Clearly, this technology can be the best alternative energy source at the same time can greatly help in restoring our environment.
