Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited

, autosomal dominant disorders characterized by progressive, peripheral vision loss and nigh blindness that can ultimately lead to central vision loss. Common symptoms include night blindness, vision loss, visual flashes of light and rarely, hearing loss. Contrary to what the name suggests, this condition is more due to degeneration than inflammation.

Lutein is already present in the light receptor cells in the retina and it is believed to serve as an antioxidant. A different study, carried out in year 2000 showed similar results, but also showed that people with blue eyes as well as those that were taking vitamin A (in a beta-carotene form, rather than in retinyl palmitate used in the current study) supplements experienced the greatest reduction in their vision loss.

Light shining on this array generates a current that depolarizes the ganglion cells, via these microelectrodes. The second approach is the epiretinal implant, which is placed on the inner or opposite layer of the retina. In this, a conventional (external) camera and processing unit are connected to a readout chip that is secured to the inner retina, at the level of the ganglion cells.

Many visually impaired kids have degenerative eye conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). While they may not be totally or even legally blind during their school years, experience shows that most will be unable to read by the time they get into college or out in the working world. Giving them a skill which can improve their independence while they are young is the prudent thing to do.

In the case of retinitis pigmentosa you can either be affected by night blindness, or you can suffer the loss of your peripheral vision. This is an inherited disease that also affects hearing. In some cases the person will have hearing loss at an early age and develop retinitis pigmentosa later in life, but often a person will develop retinitis pigmentosa first and then suffer progressive hearing loss.
