Style trends are always borrowing from the past. Classic styles of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Balenciaga all belong to the late 40s, 50s and 60s. These designers are still the top favorites in the fashion world. They along with Givenchy, Balmain ruled the fashion scene in the 50s. Hollywood lapped up the glamorous images of women projected by these designers. Movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Lauren Bacall epitomize that era of femininity, grace and glamour. The clothing of that era was mainly about simple tailoring and natural look.
Retro dresses, fashion and make up are finding a revival in modern times. Make up trends like bright red lipstick and heavily lined eyes are currently sported by modern celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Katy Perry.
1950s men"s fashion was all about casual sportswear and projecting a more relaxed look that was in stark contrast to the sober look of the War years. The reopening of the Paris fashion houses after the war, ushered in a new style of women"s wear. Pencil skirts, pan collars, cocktail dresses for evening wear, shrugs and boleros worn with short dresses became all the rage. Leading fashion designer Coco Chanel made a comeback with A-line skirts and the iconic Chanel suit. Balenciaga created trends with Chemise dresses, sheaths and princess line. Women wore two piece bikinis for swimwear and became much more adventurous in their style. The 1950s and 60s were all about style and youth trends. Hoola Hoops and leather hand bags were fashion fads of the 50s. Who can forget those bell bottom pants, funky jackets and shoes, big sunglasses, fedoras, small neckties and scarves? Women wore chiffon scarves and bright lipstick. The gloves and cigarette holder were part of the style statement. Pompadour hairstyles, and ponies and ducktails were all in fashion.
Retro dresses conjure up the image of Olivia Newton John in "Grease" with her casual pony, cardigans and full skirts. John Travolta in his leather jackets, white tee shirts, jeans and slicked back hair was a fashion trend setter to youngsters in 1978 when the movie was released. The movie was all about romance, teenagers and fashion in the late 50s. The retro dresses that Olivia wore became all the rage among teenagers of the late seventies. The 1980s also revived retro fashion in a big way. The wide shouldered look for women was revived. Modern women are partial towards vintage and retro dresses as they lend a really classy look to your closet and there are so many retro dresses to choose from!
