Retro Revival in Bars and Nightclubs
Retro is the way of the modern future, writes Nastasia Campanella
. Bars and nightclublubs everywhere have been dramatically changed because of modernisation. DJs now spin tunes on fancy new decks, iPods are used to create sets and music is made using computer programs. For many of us though, dancing around in our legwarmers, slapping on thick eyeliner and waving our hands in the air to Phil Colins is never going to get old.
Time Out Magazine predicted a retro revival at the start of 2010. "It's been 10 years since the 90's ended so we're expecting more events focusing on that decade, such as White Men Can't Crump," one writer published. "With the success of club nights like Jingle Jangle and the ongoing Britpop indie night in Sydney clubs, it looks like the retro revolution is going to grow."
Many believe retro is all about ownership, solidity and lastingness. Others say it's about having something from the past in an increasingly virtual world. In his book titled Design: Intelligence Made Visible, Stephen Bayley looks at the world's love of the past. Bayley notes the term "retro", is not a new concept. He discusses the notion that the word was first used by French journalists in the 70's to describe a design fad for looking back lovingly on the past. He wrote that we enjoy looking at the past as a psychological way of finding symbolic meaning in songs, events and recreating a time that no longer exists.
One Melbourne DJ said old music from the 70's and 80's was timeless. "Those songs will never get old, they are tunes people can dance and sing along too," he said. "I think what makes retro music so popular is that it always gets a laugh; people remember moments in time when they first heard / loved a certain song." The 27-year-old DJ said he always included retro beats in his sets. "People who can dance pull out their best moves when they hear old songs they love and know; others who can't dance feel more comfortable when older tunes come on because lots of the retro hits had proper moves that everyone knew how to do."
Tony Mitchell, senior lecturer in cultural studies at the University of Technology Sydney [UTS], doesn't think retro ever went out. "Different types of music are always coming in and out of fashion," he said. "People have always listened to retro music it's not a new concept."
However, the introduction of retro theme nights in many bars and clubs could be seen as evidence to the contrary. Over the past five years,
bars and
nightclubs have been embracing the on-going love for all things retro. One Sydney club, aptly named "Retro", pumps nothing but the best of the 70's, 80's and 90's over three levels. Other bars and clubs around the country are now cashing in on our retro revival by holding different themed nights. These places are playing the best in everything from 70's grunge, to love song dedication', type stuff.
No matter how you look at it, a love of retro is alive and thriving. For some, it's a way of reflecting on the past in a modern setting where computers exist and the eye makeup isn't as crazy. Others however, who perhaps didn't grow up listening to Blondie and Duran Duran, just love the idea of being able to transport themselves into a world beyond their imagination.
