Retro Rewind - Legaia 2: Duel Saga
While moving through mazes and dungeons, players will randomly encounter enemies
. The combat starts with four selectable commands: Battle (fight), Tactics (setup offense and defense strategy for characters), Auto (CPU will randomly perform attacks), and Run (avoid combat). In most cases you will fight since winning battles are the best way to get experience points, cash, food ingredients, and raw materials, which are used to gain level, buy new items, cook, and customize your weapons, armors, and accessories.
Once you choose to battle, characters can be strategized to attack, guard, use an item, or summon an Origin (provides elemental attack or healing aid and only available to characters that are Mystics) on their turn. To attack, you will use the controller's directional pad to input any of the 4 commands: Up, Down, Left, and Right. Depending on the order of attack sequence, each character will master and perform various fighting techniques called Arts. Once an Art has been unleashed, it is conveniently stored under that character's profile to be used again.
Players are encouraged to try different strings of attacks and mount deadly combos on their opponents while uncovering every Art available for each character. Executing Arts accumulate Action Points (AP) which is depleted when performing Super Arts, a more powerful technique than normal Arts. To make it even more rewarding, as your party progresses further into the story, they'll be able to inflict even more damage by using Hyper Arts and Mystic Arts. Though Mystic Art is the strongest technique, there is also several team-up attacks for two characters called Variable Arts. A sample of Art moves can be seen in this video:
Legaia 2 is certainly more about the action and strength of your fighters than the game's story. Most of game time will be spent engaged in battles and managing characters' skills than focusing on the mission at hand. Skills are offensive and defensive properties attached to equipment items that can further assist your party in battle. Different skills allow each character to perform special abilities like stealing items, increasing damage to opponent, receiving more money, having better escape rate, be immune to abnormal statuses, and etc. This brings us to the next key feature of the game: customization.
There are literally hundreds, maybe even thousands of combinations and upgrades possible when creating new weapons, armors, items, and accessories. If you accidentally forget the story's progress because you were too involved with customization, simply select the camp option in the world map and your party will remind you where to head next. While camping, you can also cook up various dishes that will increase or decrease your attack and defense power for a limited time.
Though the story and characters could have been developed better, overall, Legaia 2 Duel Saga offers a decent RPG experience and fans of the genre will definitely appreciate it for what it's worth. Depending on how much time is put in to explore all the game features, you can expect about 40-70 hours of game-play. Fans of the first Legaia game will most likely not have any problems liking this one. So then, will we ever see Legend of Legaia 3? Let us hope so since the series has proved to have lots of potential with a niche fan base.
