If you really stopped to think about Shadow of the Colossus, the story was much deeper than it suggested and critics let on. For instance, many gamers began to question their actions as they took down Colossus after Colossus towards an ultimately selfish goal. Yes, your girlfriend was dead and you thought you could save her by killing all of the Colossi. However, gamers often felt that twinge that the Colossi were actually innocent inhabitants of the world that only fought back when attacked. This added a whole new, deeper element to the game play for the hard thinkers among us. Could you mercilessly kill being after being to save a loved ones' life? That was a question that you had to answer while playing. Even your lack of caring or evaluation of what you were doing was answer enough to the question the game posed.

Still, the game play was exciting and fun for those who just wanted to sit back and relax. The system was pretty simple. You rode your horse to the location of a Colossus, climbed your way towards their sensitive spot and stabbed or shot them there. Rinse and repeat. However, the variety existed in the way the Colossi were constructed and the elements that would change from monster to monster. Your real treat was not the combat system. It was the elements that will keep this game on the tongues of many video game enthusiasts for years to come.

The ending sequence of the game was one of the most memorable and saddest portions of any game, of all time. When you went through it, you actually felt the mental stress and anguish that the main character would be feeling. There were hundreds of questions, uncertainties, despair and finally, a test of your determination. The music (Demise of the Ritual) perfectly blended these emotions into one solid lump of doubt and sadness. At no other time have developers succeeded so well in drawing such emotions from a player that was willing to let them in. This game was what the video game as art looked like and, thus, it still holds a special place in the hearts of gamers. If you want to see what is artistically possible in a video game, pick up Shadow of the Colossus and really try to open yourself up to it. You won't be disappointed.
