Reusable Nappies Versus Disposable Nappies

New parents have a lot to think about, too much really when sleep deprivation and

exhaustion have overhauled their life so when people jump on the parenting bandwagon and tell a new parent what they should and shouldnt do it can all get a bit much. From what a pregnant woman should and shouldnt eat, to breast-feeding and paternity pay, its a minefield and when you throw a nappy into the mix youre likely to cause a real stink.

There are arguments for and against almost everything and the one between reusable nappies and disposable nappies is no exception. It is true to say that reusable nappies are the more natural alternative, made from soft and natural fibres with the option of choosing organic cotton too and its nice to know that the babies of Britain are wrapped in natural fabrics which allow the skin to breath. Not only this, but by choosing the organic option, you will know that the cotton has been ethically and sustainably produced. Having said that, reusable nappies are designed to let your babys skin breath and while this breathability might be created artificially, using a mix of manmade materials, they have been tested to very high standards and they are designed to wick moisture away from the bottom and trap odours.

Aside from the pros and cons of manmade materials versus natural materials, the reusable disposable debate is one that is essentially green, from where the disposable ones end up to how much energy and water it takes to wash reusable ones. Disposable nappies have a bad reputation for personally clogging up landfills and this alone makes the argument for reusable nappies easy, or at least it would if nappy manufacturers hadnt cottoned on and started to produce eco-friendly disposable nappies. These eco-disposables are bleach free and the gel-free versions are perfume, dye and latex free meaning they should be better for your babys skin as well as the environment.

But these eco-friendly disposables havent got quite the rave reviews they mightve been expecting, which is unsurprising as they havent been developed over as many years with as much feedback from satisfied or dissatisfied parents. It would seem then that the best solution would be to use reusable nappies made from organic cotton when youre at home with the baby and pack a few disposable ones for convenience when youre out and about and as for choosing a disposable, this will have to be trial and error as results vary from baby to baby.

If you do decide to be kind to the environment with reusable nappies, make sure you dont counteract your good work by using an energy hungry washing machine. These days Bosch washing machines, Zanussi washing machines and all other major brands are independently tested and given an energy rating, A+ being the best performer and G being the worst in terms of energy and water used during an average cycle. Choose an energy efficient washing machine and make sure you wash full loads or choose the half load cycle if you need to and the same goes for tumble dryers, which are also energy rated so look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo when youre buying a washing machine online.
