Revealing Mail Transfer Agent

Nowadays, most of the people use electronic mail messages for communicating with others

. It is the fast and reliable method as compared to other traditional methods of the communication. A procedure is followed in sending and receiving of the e-mail messages. Now, let us understand this procedure.

A mail transfer agent (MTA) is basically a computer process or a software agent that has the capability of transferring the electronic mail messages from one computer to another. It can carry out both of the client and server portions of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).

Mail server is actually a computer that behaves as an MTA by executing the appropriate software. Mail exchanger can be mentioned as a device hosting a mail server and an IP address is allocated to it. An MTA obtains e-mail messages from another MTA or MSA or from a mail user agent (MUA). The transmission particulars are determined by the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). The e-mail message is forwarded to another MTA, if the recipients of a given message are not hosted locally. A Received trace header field is added to the top of the headers of the e-mail message, when an email message is received by an MTA.

User interacts with the MUA and the MTA works in the background. Normally, port 25 is utilized for communication between MTAs or from an MSA to an MTA. While port 587 is utilized for communication between an MUA and an MSA. The final delivery of the email to a recipient mailbox, when recipients are hosted locally, is the work of a message delivery agent (MDA). The Return-Path field is added to the envelope on the final delivery. A MUA can utilize either Post Office Protocol or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to recover a user's messages. An MTA is usually linked with the email clients for gaining access to stored messages. POP3 and IMAP are different in the way that, former utilizes the deletion of downloaded messages and the latter grants access from multiple clients. You can use a web interface for accessing mail messages.

IMAP permits the uploading of mail messages and there are executions that can be assembled in sending messages. This is done for preventing the uploading of same message twice, one for sending, and one for saving it in the Sent folder on the server. However, SMTP is still used to put messages into the mail transport system.
