It used to be if someone called you on the phone, you had no way of knowing who it was. Then, around 20 years ago or so, caller ID came on the scene. This allowed you to see the phone number of the person who called.

You can try a different tactic. Simply go to your favorite search engine and punch in the phone number. You can try different variations of it, either 555-555-5555 or (555) 555-5555 or any of a number of other combinations.

Sometimes, people post their numbers online and they are made available through a search engine. I once found a number for a bank that was trying to collect money, but they had the wrong number. Apparently, lots of people had already gone through the same thing and had posted the number.

If you cannot find reverse phone lookup results for free that work for you, there are of course paid services as well that will search more comprehensive databases of phone numbers. Some of them charge a fee per search and others charge a membership fee. I recommend you shop around.
