Review: The Nintendo Wii Console

Unlike Xbox and PlayStation, with Nintendo Wii

, simple is good. Where Xbox and PlayStation have gone overboard with more graphical capabilities in the consoles, Nintendo Wii provides a system that is easier to handle. Wii also uses a device which resembles a normal TV remote rather than a gamepad, which is very different from Xbox and PlayStation that use conventional controls such as directional pads and controls sticks.

The setting up of the console is quick and simple. It can be connected to your television using composite AV cables that come with the system. However, the drawback is that the cables do not support resolution of 480p or higher. Well, when you connect to an HDTV, you are obviously looking for some high-definition gaming. It is best to buy a separate component cable from the market to view Wii at a higher resolution.

The console has compact size and occupies hardly any space, both placed vertically and horizontally. At 6.25 inches in width, 1.75 inches in height and 8.5 inches deep (placed horizontally), the system can be placed anywhere, be it next to your desktop or your television. The first batch is available in white color, where other colors may come in the market in a few months.

The system has 512MB of internal memory which can be increased using the SD card slot provided on the console. The option of an SD card breaks away from the tradition of proprietary memory cards available with older systems. This obviously turns out to be much cheaper compared to buying proprietary memory cards.

You can navigate Wii using Wii channels. The default channels include photo, message, weather forecast and news. Virtual Console titles as well as GameCube and Wii games can be accessed through the Home page, which is the default gateway for the console. The motion sensing feature is probably the best in Nintendo Wii and is provided in all Wii games. These and several other features make Nintendo Wii a complete multimedia system.
