Review of Red (2010)

Red, a mnemonics device that stands for retired, but extremely danger, is packed full of well known actors who aren't exactly young Hollywood stars anymore, but the established actors of Red make action sexy at any age. Red has been matched up to The Expendables because they both combine action with an older cast, but Red requires more contemplating and offers strong female leads that you won't frequently see in action cinematography.

The onscreen match of Helen Mirren and Mary-Louise Parker cannot be beat by any other female action duet. Mirren plays a gun-toting action hero, while Parker stays in the shadows captivated by the retired CIA crew. Although Red may not receive accolades for its uniqueness, it still has the retired agent niche beat with its tight storyline that never gets sloppy like most in the genre. Even with the over-the-top action scenes, Red is good old-fashioned fun. Red does not just bring in action crazy youthful adults, but it brings in an mature bunch that is familiar with the cast.

The story of Red may seem known, but an ensemble cast like this makes it stand above others. Bruce Willis plays Frank Moses an Ex-CIA agent who finds a partner in Sarah played by Parker. Sarah and Frank finally meet face-to-face after many long phone calls about his pension checks. When Sarah arrives, a crew of hit man pelt Frank's residential home with bullets. In an attempt to keep her safe, Frank keeps her against her will, but she becomes charmed as the story unfolds. Happily pushed out of retirement, Frank seeks out his retired CIA buddies Joe played by Morgan Freeman, Victoria played by Mirren, and Marvin played by John Malkovich. The retired gang come together to find out why they are the focus of hit man and combat William Cooper played by Karl Urban, who would like to disintegrate Frank and his gang.

The most important thing is that the action alone is enough to go see the movie, but the character development is incredible. Bruce Willis plays the lonesome ex-CIA agent who has adjusting to the normal life and develops a relationship with Mary-Louise Parker's panic-struck yet intrigued character. Morgan Freeman's character adjusts well to life without the CIA in his retirement neighborhood. Helen Mirren arranges flowers, but still holds on to her secret agent past when she takes on shady side jobs. John Malkovich plays a certifiable conspiracy theorist that was given LSD on a daily basis while in the CIA, which prompts his character to carry around a stuffed pig. Don't let the band of an older cast deter you from seeing Red because you will be doing yourself a miscarriage of justice.
