Revisit The Heritage Of Batangas Through 6 Historically Relevant Structures
Batangas is known for its world-class diving sites and natural attractions
. Batangas guides will never be complete without mentioning Anilao in Mabini, Sombrero Island in Tingloy, or Ligpo Island in Bauan. Then, there is the quintessential tour to Taal Volcano and the hiking trips to Mt. Maculot, Pico de Loro, and Batulao, among other peaks. The province also has a number of sites that have witnessed and survived significant events that molded the country's history:
1. The Punta de Santiago Lighthouse in Calatagan was built in 1890 and, despite having gone through the Spanish, American, and Japanese occupations, remains functional to this day.
2. The Mabini Shrine in Talaga, Tanauan houses the remains and estate of the Apolinario Mabini. Dubbed 'The Sublime Paralytic' and 'The Brains of the Katipunan', Mabini was appointed the first prime minister of Emilio Aguinaldo's newly independent dictatorial government from 1899 to 1901.
3. The General Malvar Museum and Library in Gov. Malvar St., Sto. Tomas is a shrine dedicated to the last Filipino general who surrendered to the Americans. The house, which belonged to the late general's family, was donated along with the general's memorabilia, including the oil paintings that commemorated his birth centenary celebration.
4. The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception & Infant Jesus was built in 1851 and underwent expansion in 1857 to accommodate the town's growing population. It was granted a basilica status by Pope Pius XII in 1948.
5. Before it was converted into a museum and declared a heritage house by the National Historical Commission, Casa Segunda was home to the Katigbak clan, which is among the more notable families in Batangas. One of the family's prominent members is Segunda Katigbak, said to be Dr. Jose Rizal's first love.
6. Standing 96 m long and 45 m wide, the Basilica de San Martin de Tours is said to be the largest church in the Philippines and in Asia. First built in 1572, the original church structure underwent several renovations before it was destroyed by the Taal eruption in 1754. The church and town were then transferred to its present location. The existing church building began construction in 1856 and was completed in 1878. St. Martin of Tours is the patron saint of Taal.
Because it is one of the most popular destinations outside Manila, there are plenty of accommodations in Batangas. Resorts are also lined up along its beaches, with some even offering scuba diving tours and equipments. With a lot of attractions, it would be wise to consult a Batangas guide in order save time and make the most out of a trip to this tourist area.
