Having endured a tough twelve months it appears the telecoms sector is now seeing something resembling a revival in certain areas. Although the UK mobile network infrastructure is well matured and operators are currently going through a cost saving process with joint venture agreements it is clear that continued growth in popularity of smart phones has piled in the pressure on data rates available. One solution that seems to be popular in addressing this is the use of femtocell technology. Operators such as Vodafone have a very high profile campaign in place to encourage their adoption by customers which in turn is seeing a high volume of requirements with vendors looking to develop new features on their products. This is reflected in Matchtech's dedicated Telecoms team's current experience of a high volume demand for software engineers with expertise in all levels of Linux, C++ and software architecture for mobile devices.
In the handset world, the competition with vendors to adopt the increasing popular open source and easy to use operating systems being developed by the likes of Google, Apple and Microsoft is also driving an ongoing demand for software engineers with knowledge of the likes of Android or Java in a mobile environment.
In the Broadcast sector the DSO work is coming to a close with the end date still in place for 2012. Going forward the challenge is to get consumers to adopt the digital technology required to utilise the new network and ensure any problems are avoided when the analogue service is switched off in the future. With the pressure on government spend it seems the pressure to follow up the DSO with rolling out of a full DAB network has eased but it is still in the pipeline and further announcements are expected on this in the next 12 months.
