Rhinoplasty: Closed Or Open Surgery?

There are two general types of rhinoplasty

There are two general types of rhinoplasty. The open or external rhinoplastic surgery entails an incision made in the skin between your nostrils called the columella. The closed or endonasal rhinoplastic surgery involves incisions made inside the nostrils. There are two factors that can help you decide which of these methods is the best is for you.

The first consideration is the doctor. Some plastic surgeons happen to be extremely proficient at one procedure or the other. Some doctors find it easier to do a clean job by perform the closed method and keeping all the incisions on the inside of the nasal passages. This means there can be no external scaring because no external skin is being cut. Other plastic surgeons feel more comfortable with the amount of access the external incision gives them because the tip of the nose can then be folded back revealing almost the entire structure of the nose. This allows surgeons who are particular to the external incision method an ability to better reconstruct the nasal structure and in their eyes do a better job.

This is why you may find some doctors will lobby for one method or the other during your consultation. Although you may have come with one of the procedure types already in mind, you should still hear your surgeon out because they are the ones who will be doing the cutting.

The other consideration is the type of nose you have. Everyone's nasal oening is unique and sometimes there is a need for complete reconstruction as oppose to other patients that only require limited reconstruction. In the case of a patient that only needs limited rhinoplasty, it would probably be advisable to investigate a surgeon that is comfortable with making endonasal incisions because they can take advantage of the fact that you are only trimming or shaping one particular aspect of your nose. If, however, you are in need of a complete reconstruction then your best bet is to look into a surgeon that does amazing work with the external rhinoplasty. It's always a good idea to find a surgeon that does great work with the incision your nose requires, but don't forget to ask the doctor to help you make that determination.

Remember that you don't want to guide everything around what type of incision you feel is best because otherwise everyone would demand endonasal incisions to avoid any chance of scaring. Allow your doctor to give you information regarding what type of method they perform best and what type of method they believe is best for your particular nose type.
