Rhinoplasty: Important Reminders To Follow For Recovery
Getting a nose job (rhinoplasty) done is a common procedure
. However, in order for you to heal properly you have to remember to follow the rules of recovery. After the surgery, it is important to rest with your head above your chest. Using a few pillows can help you accomplish this task. This is to help prevent swelling, and to aid any drainage or bleeding that there might be.
You will likely have a splint or cast for protection. This is in place to protect the new nose and to maintain the new shape. Your surgeon may also place some gauze underneath your nostrils to catch any drainage there might be.
It is common for blood and mucous to drip out after surgery. This piece of gauze needs to be changed regularly and changed with care so as to not disturb your face. These usually remain in place for about a week, and then the cast or splint is removed.
Often, after the procedure, you will feel very congested due to swelling and the cotton that was packed in your nose during surgery. Your doctor will advise you to avoid heavy chewing, and clothes that have to be pulled over the head.
Anything that could disturb the operated area is to be avoided, as the few weeks after the procedure are crucial to healing. You cannot go swimming and should avoid any facial expressions that cause pain. You are not to wear any glasses, because they can hurt your nose when they rest on the bridge.
Over-exposure to the sun can cause discoloration of the skin. After the surgery, it is common that the face gets swollen. Bruising occurs underneath both eyes. But, most of it is gone within two to three weeks.
However, rhinoplasty recovery is a long process. The final result can take up to a year to see. Ensuring that you take proper care during the healing time is necessary to get the best result.
Some doctors will recommend cold compresses or ice packs to be used to help with the swelling and discomfort. However, you need to talk to your doctor to get his or her recommendation as they might have a reason to use another method.
Some side-effects of getting a rhinoplasty done are numbness, tingling, pain, bleeding, and difficulty in breathing. With all of these risk factors, it is important to follow all of the rules your doctor set out for you regarding recovery.
Rhinoplasty is a big deal, but when you are vigilant in your post-surgery care, your nose will heal well and you should be able to live the exact life you lived before, but with more happiness about your appearance.
