Rich Snippets

Google introduced Rich Snippets on May 12, 2009

, which is a new presentation of snippets that applies Googles algorithms to highlight structured data embedded in Web pages. These rich snippets are used by webmasters and site authors to provide an attractive and easy to read summary about the search result. To display Rich Snippets, Google looks for markup formats (microformats and RDFa) that Webmasters can add to Web pages to make structured data available for Googles search results.

In this snippets process Google assists users to locate your page by displaying a small piece of content known in other words as snippet.

Rich snippet integration can be achieved in three basic ways:

* Microdata This method is very useful after HTML5 rolls out

* Microformats A very straight forward method with basic SPAN, DIV, and attribute definitions

* RDFa This is also fairly easy, but seems more targeted at XHTML than normal HTML

Microdata takes advantage of new HTML5 metadata, such as itemscope, itemtype, and itemprop. A very simple and futuristic process.

Microformats are similar to microdata, but just reworded in standard HTML 4 language (using classes).

RDFa is much more XMLesque in terms of using a namespace and implementing tags that correspond to that definition.

Use the Rich Snippets Tool and test your work Use this tool to check your markup and make sure that Google can extract the structured data from your page. This tool displays the markup found on a specific web page, as well as a preview of how that page might appear in Google search results.

What are Microformats?

Microformats are simple entities used on web pages to describe a specific type of information for example, a review, an event, a product, a business, or a person. Each entity has its own properties. For example, a person has name, address, job title, company, and email address as properties.

Beware of microformats/CSS naming collisions

A common mistake made when using microformats is to reuse the same values for class attributes when they mean two different things. For example, if you include an hReview on your page, and include a class=rating inside of it, Google assumes that the text inside the tag containing class=rating is in fact a rating. But if class=rating is also used for a different purpose on your page, for example to change the font of some text on the page related to the rating, your content may not be analyzed correctly by Googles structured data parsers. When using microformats, make sure that you arent inadvertently using the same class name for multiple purposes.

These snippets are of great help to users to find what they want in the search results pages. But snippets may or may not show up in Google results and hence cannot be taken as a guarantee for success.

A slow roll out process from Google is expected where snippets are concerned to ensure a greater user experience.
