Rid Clutter From Your Home With These 4 Handy Tips

Why should you rid clutter from your home? It is difficult to function efficiently when your dresser drawers are stuffed full of clothes or your kitchen sink is piled high with dishes. When your home is cluttered, you are a disorganized mess. But when it is tidy and in order, you can focus and get more accomplished in a shorter amount of time. You'll feel better too when you live in a tidy home. You'll have less stress and feel peaceful. When your home is unorganized, you never know where anything is and when you need something, you have to go on a mad search for it. Not only that, you have to live with anxiety over the thought that someone will stop by unexpectedly and see your mess. Here are 4 tips to help you rid clutter from your home.1. Corral Your PapersOne of the most common forms of clutter is paper. You probably have stacks of paper here and there on your table or desk. You might have magazines and newspapers on the floor or stacked in a corner. Papers can easily take over your house if you let them. You may not have the patience or time to look over each piece of mail or paper that comes into your home and decide there and then if it stays or goes, but you do have time to drop all of your papers into a box. Just place a box by the door or next to your desk and use it only for collecting paper. Promise yourself you will never lay a receipt, magazine, or piece of mail down anywhere but inside that box. You can tackle clearing out the box now and then when you have time and in the mean time, all of your papers will be in one place so they don't overrun the house. Plus if you ever need a receipt or letter, you will know immediately where you can find it.2. Clear Out The ClosetYour bedroom closet is probably the most cluttered area in your home. Getting rid of old clothes is very difficult to do so we tend to hold onto them long after we have stopped wearing them. Cleaning out a closet is such a big job that it rarely gets done. You can tackle the job using baby steps so it seems more manageable. Every time you pull an article of clothing out of your closet when getting dressed, grab one other piece you haven't worn for several months and drop it into a box on the floor. It may take you a few weeks to fill the box, but when it is, take it off to the Goodwill store and let someone else get good use out of the clothes that you will probably never wear again anyway. Gradually, you will have more and more room in your closet and once you see how much better it looks, you will become motivated to finish the job and keep the area tidy.3. Establish Clutter Free ZonesIf your house is unorganized throughout, the idea of decluttering is probably overwhelming. You can easily talk yourself out of getting started. Instead, make a commitment to rid clutter from one small area. You can pick a part of a room or a whole room like the kitchen or living room and focus all of your energy on that once space. Use it like a practice area where you can build your decluttering and organizational skills. Only do what you can handle to start with, it might be the kitchen table or a kitchen counter. Choose a place, declutter it, and then declare it a clutter free zone and keep it tidy. Once you are able to keep that one area tidy, expand your clutter free zone to include more of the room. This will help you develop good habits of putting things were they go but since you start with a small space, you won't get overwhelmed.4. Give Your Home A Spring CleaningIt doesn't have to be springtime, but at least once a year, you should give your entire home a thorough cleaning from top to bottom. Schedule cleaning day well in advance so the whole family is available. Have all of the needed supplies at the ready and follow your plan so you can get a lot accomplished in a few short days. You may even need to rent a truck and buy boxes. The idea is to clear out your home of clutter you don't use any more. If you do this once a year you can keep ahead of your clutter. If you don't thoroughly clean your home for several years, you will accumulate so much junk, you will have a really big job on your hands. Plus, an annual deep cleaning will teach your kids to maintain a clutter free home when they get bigger and carry on the tradition. The decision to rid clutter from your home is a wise one but it takes determination and commitment because old habits are notoriously difficult to break. Plus, it is easy to get attached to your stuff, even meaningless things like papers, and it may be very hard to throw anything out. The only thing you can do is roll up your sleeves and start. Even if it is just keeping the dining room table clutter free to begin with. Before long, you will take pride in your accomplishments and how neat your clutter free zone looks, and that will spur you on to tackle other areas of your home.
