Ride On Lawn Mower Safety

Ride on mowers are dangerous machines, with sharp

, strong moving parts moving with enough force to easy cause serious injury to an operator. In the US only, over 80,000 people are hospitalised each year from lawn mower accidents.

Please bear in mind the following safety issues before using a ride on mower:

1. You must protect your eyes using safety goggles. These will protect from the obvious dangers of stones being thrown out from the blades, but also in drier conditions a fair amount of dust can be blown up so goggles will help protect the eyes from irritation.

2. Wear sensible clothing that will protect you from stones and other objects being thrown out from the blades. For example, don't wear shorts! A stone flying at a good number of knots can produce some rather nasty cuts.

3. Ear guards for some ride on mowers are recommended. Although modern mowers are designed specifically to reduce as much noise as possible if you are going to be using your mower for a sustained period of time it might pay to invest in them - your lawn isn't worth damaging your hearing over!

4. Most injuries could easily be prevented if ride on mower operators wore sensible shoes. Never operate a machine in bare feet, or even sandals. Sounds obvious doesn't it!

5. If you have loose items of clothing or long hair then take a few seconds to tie it back and out of the way. It's not worth risking it getting caught in the machinery.

6. If your hands are in danger of slipping on the mowers steering wheel (if you have sweaty palms or it's raining) then it's recommended that a pair of gloves are worn. This will improve grip and you'll lessen the risk of the steering wheel slipping.

7. When the sun is shining strongly you may want to wear a cap to help your visibility. Also you may want to put some sun screen on to avoid getting sunburnt as a large lawn may take some time to mow.

8. Before starting to cut the lawn take a couple of seconds to ensure that the machine's adjustable seat (if it is adjustable) is correct for your body and that you can easily reach all the levers and steering wheel.

9. Most ride on mowers these days have a drinks holder. Since it's there you might as well use and keep hydrated whilst out on the lawn.

10. Always wear the seat belt - the last thing you want to do is fall out of a moving ride on mower!
