Riding A Horse - How To Find A Good Bit?
Horses are magnificent animals
Horses are magnificent animals. At the same time, they are wonderful friends to us. They are intelligent, loving and reliable, and if we learn how to communicate with them correctly, our mutual relationship will be pleasant and rewarding.
Horse riding is not only a sport or an enjoyable way to spend your free time. It's first of all a harmonious connection between the human and the equine, an activity that will allow you to explore on a new level the beauty of nature.
The bits, the bridles, the reins and the saddle are elements of the horse tack. All these tools have been used for centuries in order to help the rider to control and train his horse. Nonetheless, let's not forget that simple words - if containing the right attitude - can be easily understood by horses as well, making the riding experience more effective and agreeable.
Horse bits are usually a controversial subject. Indeed, by putting pressure in the mouth of the equine, they are very effective in commanding the animal. At the same time, an inexperienced rider can easily hurt his horse by pulling the reins with too much enthusiasm - after such a harsh treatment, the horse may stop responding to training or even worse, he can become aggressive.
Among all the bits present on the market, the snaffle is the one recommended for young untrained horses. This is a non-leverage bit which functions by applying direct, unamplified pressure - this makes it harder for inexperienced riders to cause unwanted pain to the horse.
The curb bits are more severe - they use the action of special levers to amplify the pressure that comes from the reins. That's why it's not recommended to use leverage bits if you don't have enough riding experience - you can easily hurt your horse.
Besides the curb and the snaffle, there are other types of bits you can choose from. An interesting model is the hackamore bit, which is basically a headpiece without a bit - it works by applying pressure around the head and the nose of the horse. There are also different models of non-curb leverage bits, pinchless bits, roller bits and many others.
No matter what type of bit you use, don't forget to be gentle, loving and understanding. Horses are very smart and they'll surely respond with the same attitude, allowing you to have an unforgettable riding experience!
