Last month I was in Daytona with a few friends and while there a couple of us decided to wander around some of the vendors to see what was on offer
. One of the vendors there had decided to purchase a load of wholesale riding glasses and brought them to Bike Week. I was in two minds about whether or not he was the appropriate person to obtain riding glasses from but then my friend decided to question him about the procedure for shopping for riding glasses. He was more than happy to provide us with a very detailed answer and despite myself, I found that I was very impressed.
He started by explaining the purpose behind riding glasses. He told us that riding glasses would protect the eyes from drying up in the wind and also from flying debris. A set of sunglasses is sufficient for anyone with a helmet that has a shield because this would already protect the eyes. Even so , he told us that if a biker doesn't have a shield, then she / he could face dust, stones, bugs and the wind; and that was while wearing a set of sunglasses.
He explained that a set of riding glasses that fit comfortably would protect against flying debris. But he explained that in order to make sure the glasses could breathe, we should look for a set that had foam padding. Without the foam padding you have one of two options: glasses that're too tight and can cause condensation or fogging, or glasses that were so loose they still allowed eye-drying air flow. The foam padding provides breathability without allowing significant airflow.
He also said that a set of glasses should really be strong and durable so we would need to look for polycarbonate material. It's true that while these were most likely the most dear riding glasses according to him they were well worth the price. It was more likely that a cheap set would break effortlessly and they would also be harder to see out of within a shorter space of time.
