It is estimated by the American Tinnitus Association that approximately 50 million people have experienced a ringing in the ear some time in their life. At times, someone may experience a slight ringing or humming in their ear, however, if the ringing or humming becomes constant for a good length of time then this could be an indication that you have Tinnitus. This should not be considered as a disease but rather a symptom which may be the result of nerve damage caused to the inner ear.

Tinnitus may be heard in a variety of different noises. To some it may be whistling, chirping, hissing, buzzing, humming, roaring and of course ringing. Ear ringing causes may be connected to a variety of problems. It may be a result of continued exposure to loud noises, loss of hearing, head and neck injuries or temporomandibular joint disorder (jaw). Rarely, a much more serious cause of Tinnitus is a tumor which may be possible if the ringing in ear is found to be located exclusively in one ear.

Another form of Tinnitus is called Pulsatile Tinnitus which is when a person can hear their own pulse in their ears. This type may be linked to high blood pressure, vascular disease or tumors and is also commonly found in people with allergies.
