Ringworm Infection - Is Ringworm Contagious?

Ringworm is a fungal infection which is contagious

. Contrary to misconceptions, ringworm is not caused by a worm. The term ringworm only came from the shape of the infection which appears as rounded patches on the skin. Most of the time, they appear red and scaly, and are often itchy. You can catch the infection through different ways.

Direct contact with an infected person. If you come in direct contact with a person whose skin is infected with ringworm, it is likely that you will catch the fungus and develop the infection yourself.

Use of objects owned by infected persons. When you share a towel, comb, slippers and other personal items with a person who is infected with ringworm, chances are you will catch the infection as well. It is best to avoid sharing such items to be sure that you are safe from any fungal infection.

Surface contact. Ringworm can be acquired by stepping on an unclean and moist surface. Since the fungus thrives in humid and moist environment, bathroom floors and other similar surfaces have high possibility that they contain the fungus. Wear bathroom slippers and keep your spaces cool and dry to avoid the growth of fungi and bacteria. Dirty bed linens which an infected person had lied on can also be the source of infection.

Contact with animals. Dogs and cats can also carry ringworm. If you touch an infected animal, or if you groom them, you can acquire the infection. Other animals which can carry ringworm include cows, pigs, goats, horses and guinea pigs. When someone at home develops ringworm, check your pets because they might be the cause.

Contact with soil. Although this rarely happens, you can catch ringworm from soil. Infected soil, however, would not be as strong as other causes, so ringworm can only be acquired after long exposure on the surface.

Most ringworm infections can be treated by topical creams which are applied twice a day for three weeks. With this, utmost care and cleanliness should be maintained while treating the infections.

It is best to put bandage on the affected areas to avoid them from spreading to other parts of the body, and so that they will not be infected by bacteria. You should also avoid scratching the patches to let the wounds heal properly and so that they will not worsen.
