Risks to Golfers That You Should Be Aware Of
Golfing is a great activity that is entertaining and a good source of exercise but there are dangers involved with the sport. Injuries on the golf course may be less common than on the football or rugby pitches but you should not believe you are immune from injuries or accidents occurring with this sport.
One of the biggest worries for golfers is being struck with a moving ball. The speed that a golf ball flies through the air ensures that a lot of damage could be done if it struck you which make a moving ball one of the biggest risks to golfers. This is why players are expected to look ahead on the course to make sure no one is likely to be hit before driving the ball. It is also why it is custom to shout "fore" to offer a warning that a ball may be coming towards a person. However, this does not always happen or some players may not hear the shout.
Away from being struck by a golf ball, another major source of injury can come from falling or slipping on the course. Walking for 18 holes can become tiring and if the condition underfoot is slippy or not secure, people can easily lose their grip. Proper golf shoes should provide a good element of grip with their spikes but if the spikes aren't worn or other shoes are worn, golfers may fall or go over on their ankle.
Alternatively, if a golfer users a cart to get around the course, there is risk to golfers and to themselves if the cart is unable to be controlled. Many golf courses feature dips and hills which could make it difficult to retain control of the buggy, which could lead to a crash.
Some golfers are also at risk of injury when swinging their golf club. Having a proper stance and grip of the club is important to be able to strike the ball as accurately and as hard as possible but having a poor stance can cause injury. The shoulder, arm and back area can all be affected by swinging in an incorrect manner, so be sure to check your stance and swing is in a good condition when you tee off.
There are many risks to golfers on a golf course but taking proper care and attention and learning how to swing properly should help minimize the majority of risks and potential injuries a golfer could suffer from.
