Road Construction Signs

A common category of signs is road construction signs

. These include arrowed, directional, and informational type signage. The arrows are easy to interpret; they usually show upcoming bends in the road indicating drivers to slow down and be cautious.

They are typically large yellow signs with black lettering or figures and are most often seen on highways when construction crews are working on the road.

"Road Work Ahead" means that there are crews up ahead working on the road. This is usually accompanied with a "Slow Down" or "Reduced Speed" sign. Drivers should be alert of any construction workers and be mindful of backed-up traffic due to the construction.

"No Passing Zone" means that drivers should remain in the lane they are currently driving in. This is typically shown on one-lane highways where portions of the road are safe to drive on the left side of the road, if no oncoming traffic is present, to pass a slower driver in front of you. "No Passing Zone" means it is not safe to go into the left lane to pass because oncoming traffic is not visible and may cause a head-on accident.

"Detour Ahead" indicates that the way drivers usually take is not available because the road is closed due to construction. Since the street is closed, construction crews have set-up an alternate route that guides drivers around the construction site and to the street they were originally trying to get to.

"Road Closed Ahead" is self explanatory and informs drivers of a road that is unavailable due to construction. "One Lane Road Ahead" indicates that you are currently driving on a multi-lane street, and that the lanes and the vehicles in them will need to merge into a single lane.

"Right Lane Closed Ahead" or "Right Two lanes Closed Ahead" informs drivers that that the lane or lanes farthest to the right of the street will not be available up ahead, and drivers should switch to the left lanes.

"Flagger Ahead" lets people driving know that they should slow down because a person with instructional signs will tell them to stop, slow down so that traffic can flow more smoothly around a construction site. There is also a sign with a picture of a person holding out a flag.

"Shoulder Work" means that there is an off ramp on the highway or freeway and some form of construction is being done there. This tells drivers to drive cautiously when getting off, and be aware of any worker and traffic build-up because of it.

"Right Shoulder Closed" and "Right Shoulder Closed Ahead" means that the ramp on the right is not open for traffic and drivers should take the exit before or after it to get to their destination.

"Utility Work Ahead" means that crews are working on water, gas, or electricity lines that are under or above the road.

"Road Narrows" or "Narrow Bridge" means that the lane you are driving in is going to get less wide, meaning that you will be closer to any cars that are driving in the lane next to you. Especially with "Narrow Bridge," drivers should slow down so that you don't graze or brush cars that are going the same or opposite direction as you.

"Bump" indicates a small but abrupt hill across the road that is typically used to control driver's speed in the area. "Dip" indicates a small but abrupt indentation across the road that is typically used for drainage purposed. These vary in height, depth, and width; drivers should slow down for these so as to damage their car.

"No Center Strip" tells a driver that even though paint on the road does not illustrate it, there are multiple lanes on the road. Drivers should stay as far right as they can so as to not crash into oncoming traffic.

"Loose Gravel" informs drivers that there are many small rocks on the road that may be kicked up from tires. Drivers should drive cautiously since the surface they are driving on is uneven and may cause them to slide. They should also keep a safe distance from cars in front of them so as to avoid their windshield being cracked by a rock kicked up from the tires on the car ahead.

These are only a few construction site signs, but there are many more, each with different meanings. Drivers should know the meaning of the signs and operate their vehicle accordingly.
