The government have revealed plans this week to make the UK the safest country in the world for driving, and cut road deaths by a third by 2020. This is great news for Britain's drivers, as it could impact favourably on the cost of our Car Insurance.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick outlined a range of proposals to review speed limits and the driver training and testing process, to make our roads safer. A panel is being drafted in to investigate road safety issues, concentrating on some of the most dangerous accident hotspots in the country, and working on a new road safety qualification that will be developed as a credit towards the current driving test. In the new proposal, the streets around schools could have their speed limits drop to twenty miles per hour, and limits for dangerous country roads could be dropped significantly. In addition, important changes to the practical and theory tests for new drivers will be implemented, to protect the country's newest drivers from accidents.

This highbrow panel will be implemented at the start of June, with moves to improve the safety of our roads as soon as possible.

There have been seventeen thousand fewer deaths this decade compared to the last, so road safety is improving, but the government want more action to stop inexperienced drivers causing accidents and deaths on the UK roads.
