Road Traffic Accident Victim Awarded 2.45million

In a recent case reported in the Oxford Times, a man won a multi million pound payout as a result of suffering serious brain and head injuries after being knocked off of his bike by a car in 2001. The amount of compensation for road traffic injuries can vary dramatically, and as this case demonstrates, awards can take a long time to be settled.

In this particular case, a 24 year old cyclist who was a student at the nearby Oxford Brookes University was hit by a car, resulting in horrific brain and head injuries. He was left in a coma and stayed in hospital for more than a year being treated. As a result, for the past nine years he has needed 24-hour care from a number of hospitals and a team of support workers.

Settlement Based on Care Needs

When the case was heard at London's High Court, the judge awarded a lump sum of 2.45million in road traffic accident injury compensation. The victim will also receive tax free payments of 120,000-a-year to cover the costs of his care for the rest of his life.

Cycling accidents are common but cases in which the victim receives such a substantial amount of compensation are not so. In this case, the extreme road traffic accident injuries suffered by the cyclist and the fact he now needs round the clock care from a range of carers and specialists were taken into account. The compensation will no doubt make the victim's life a little bit more financially secure at the very least; although the injuries sustained will of course affect him for the rest of his life.

In cases such as this, the judge often takes into account how quality of life has been affected and the payout awarded to this cyclist reflects the catastrophic drop in life quality for this particular claimant.
