Nainital, located in the Kumaon foothills in Uttarakhand
, lies in the midst of three mountains of Naina, Deopatha and Ayarpatha. The name of Nainital literally translates into lake of the eye with naina meaning eye and tal meaning lake.

Buses and taxis are available in Nainital to reach Pantnagar airport. The taxis will charge a rate of around Rs.1500.
Nainital also does not have a railhead. The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam, which is situated at a distance of 35 km from Nainital. There are three direct trains from Nainital to Delhi. Among the two daily direct trains are Kathgodam-Delhi Uttaranchal Sampark Kranti Express (No.15036) and KathgodamBhagat ki Kothi Ranikhet Express No.15014). KathgodamAnand Vihar Shatabdi Express (No.12039) runs on all the days of the week except on Thursdays. While Shatabdi Express takes only 5 hours and 30 minutes to travel from Nainital to Delhi, the others take a little more time. Kathgodam can be reached from Nainital by bus or taxi. The taxis charge about Rs.750 for the trip.
Travel by road is comfortable. Regular private buses ply from Nainital to Delhi. It takes nearly eight hours to reach Delhi from Nainital. The fares for the private Deluxe and A/c Volvo bus range from Rs.400 to 800 depending on the type of bus tourists prefer to travel.
Taxis are also available in plenty to travel from Nainital to Delhi. Taxi fare for the round trip ranges from Rs.6000 to 8000 depending on the type of vehicle the travellers hire. The taxi cabs reach the destination from Delhi in nearly seven hours. The road takes the NH87 route and passes through Moradabad, Hapur and Ghaziabad.
