Road users caught committing 'fatal four' driving offences

A number of drivers have been caught committing what have been dubbed the 'fatal four' traffic offences.

Avon and Somerset Police have been conducting Operation Vortex in a bid to make the area's highways safer.

During a two-week period, officers identified more than 450 road users who were guilty of driving offences that fell into these categories.

They include speeding, drink-driving, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone.

As part of the initiative, officers carried out targeted patrols on roads that had been identified as collision hot spots in a bid to enforce the law and offer safety advice to motorists.

Over the two-week period, 293 individuals were caught committing traffic offences that involved exceeding the speed limit.

Meanwhile, 91 were found not have been wearing a seatbelt and 74 were talking on handheld mobile phones while in control of a vehicle.

In addition, five were arrested for drink driving. Such driving offences fall into the categories of using a vehicle with excess alcohol, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and being unfit through drink or drugs.

During the operation, police officers also seized 30 vehicles because of a lack of insurance and a further 12 that were being used without a licence. A number of cases also involved cars that had been stolen.

Responding to the figures, Chief Inspector Polly King said: "Approximately 17 per cent of fatal and serious injury collisions are attributable to what we refer to as the 'fatal four' driver behaviour traits.

"Last year, 65 people were killed and 493 seriously injured on Avon and Somerset's roads and we have a duty improve road safety and ultimately save lives."

She added: "This operation was very successful and I hope will make drivers realise that they are not invincible and will encourage them to drive responsibly in future."
