Roadtrip Essentials Checklist

Before you pack up the RV for your trip, there are a few things you need to do to ensure your safety on the road

. First and most importantly, make sure you get a full mechanical check up on your RV and any vehicles you're towing. Set your appointment at least 30 days before your departure date, leaving plenty of time for repairs to be made if needed. Your owner"s manual should include a summary of necessary maintenance to be performed.

For the most part, items that require inspection are pretty standard, both inside and outside of the RV itself. Here"s a look at some basic things to check before setting out on the open road.

"Tires. Check and adjust the air pressure in all of your tires. If it"s cold outside, check them more frequently throughout the duration of the trip.

"Lug nuts. Look for things like discoloration and stains, which may indicate the lug nuts are loose.

"Awning. The awning should be securely stored, with any travel locks and knobs turned tightly and set in the locked position.

"Bike racks. Make sure your bikes are securely mounted on the bike rack.

"Cords & hoses. All power cords, water hoses and sewer hoses should be properly disconnected and stored away.

"Slide outs. Slide outs should be slid back in their housing units and securely locked.

"Jacks. All stabilizer and hydraulic leveling jacks should be raised.

"Leaks. Check beneath the RV for any indication of leaks or to see if anything is out of place.

"Batteries. Check and charge your RV starting batteries as needed. It's never a bad idea to pack battery chargers for your RV and for any electronic devices you're bringing along.

"Turn all appliances off. Do a thorough walk-through, around the outside and inside of your RV, and turn off all appliances, mostly those that could drain the RV"s auxillary battery, including LP gas appliances, pilot lights and water pumps.

"Lights. Check all running lights, turn signals, brake lights and headlights on both the RV and tow vehicle(s).

"Hitches. Double check all of the hitch work on you RV and on the vehicles that will be towed behind the RV.

"Fluids. Check fluid levels in your RV and tow vehicles. Bring along a few extra gallons of water for the radiator in case it overheats.

"Brakes. Check the brakes on all vehicles to make sure they're in top working order.

This is just a brief checklist of the basic items to check before going on a roadtrip. Check your owner's manual to ensure all proper maintenance has been completed before your departure.
