Rock And Republic Jeans: From Motorbikes To Denim

Rock and Republic Jeans was started in Los Angeles

, California in 2002 by Michael Ball. The company's president is Ball's long time friend, Andrea Bernholtz. They are famous amongst the Hollywood crowd and have a famous pant known as the VB Rocks. It was created in partnership with Victoria Beckham and has an undeniable flattering effect on the derriere of women who wear them. The line includes Rock and Republic Womens Jeans as well as clothes for men, children, maternity wear, eyewear, shoes, handbags and even cosmetics.

Prior to starting the company Ball was an amateur cyclist as well as an actor. On the side he devoted his time to motorbike designs and clothing. That is, until one day, his then girlfriend came home wearing a pair of pants that was less than ideal in his eyes. He decided he would design her a pair of pants. She liked them as did his clothing distributor friend in Japan. He made some more pairs for distribution and with that Rock and Republic Jeans was born.

Ball began the apparel naming each design after different rock icons. He soon grew out of this however and broke a great barrier in the denim market. As it stands today many jeans are made in relatively the same way. It was his stitching and core design as well as his pocket placement, fabric and other small design details that made these womens jeans a great fit.

However, despite sales, not all was well with Ball and his company. He has since split with Beckham as partners and was tangled in lawsuits with her for money owed. He was also tied to lawsuits with an ex-girlfriend who claimed he was attempting to extort money from her via a series of private photos. Furthermore, he was tied to trademark infringement with another leading denim company, though that has since been settled out of court.

Regardless of the sideshow that inevitably will follow those with money and fame, Rock and Republic Jeans continues to point to the future. They currently have a 15 year plan set in place in which Ball claims they will dominate the market. While that remains to be seen, we can safely say that they have done remarkably well in such a short time. That is thanks, in part, to joining the business at an opportune time when celebrities love fashion and we the public seem to worship them. Either way, the future should have some more excitement for these guys.
