Rocket French is a popular French learning program. Does it really work?

WHAT'S INSIDE ROCKET FRENCH?

Rocket French is available as a set of CDs or as a download. The system has videos, software, and special audio recordings. In addition, you are given access to a "Learning Lounge" where you can test your skills, and connect with other students and instructors.

The basic method is teaching French by a process called "visual association". Visual association is how you learned your first language. You SAW something and HEARD the word for it at the same time. In this manner you easily and quickly picked up the meanings of words. Rocket French attempts to replicate the process with the use of software, audio, and video.

HOW WELL DOES IT WORK?

If you are serious and willing to work with the material regularly, Rocket French is a very powerful way to learn to speak French. Ideally, you should aim to view the lessons for a little time everyday (30min to 1hr at least). The lessons are made to build on each other. Therefore, being consistent is important.

Picking up a language is alot like learning to ride a bike. For the first week or so you might feel that you aren't getting anywhere. If you persist, however, you will come to a point when things suddenly "fall into place". You will find yourself creating sentences without effort and hearing most of the words in the audio recordings.

Then you can proceed to learning more advanced vocabulary and grammar.

IS ROCKET FRENCH A GOOD FIT FOR EVERYONE?

Some people find it difficult to focus unless there is some outside pressure such as an upcoming "exam" or a teacher checking their "homework".

Rocket French is a learn at home approach. It is very powerful but you must provide the follow-through yourself

If you feel you might need the pressure of a classroom setting in order to follow through, look into classes at a local college. Keep in mind that classroom instruction will cost more and can take longer.
